“THE ASTON MARTIN DB4
Aston Martin’s series of DB-badged grand tourers reached an exciting new level with the introduction of the DB4 in 1958. Replacing the outgoing DB Mark III, the DB4 was a clean-sheet design that would profoundly influence the brand’s future models. Penned by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan and employing the firm’s famed Superleggera (super-light) construction method, the DB4’s sleek aluminum coachwork enveloped an all-new steel platform chassis—setting it apart as one of the most advanced British sports cars of its era.
Unveiled at the London Motor Show in October 1958, the DB4 showcased Aston Martin’s commitment to performance and style. Power came from a new 3.7-liter, twin-cam, straight-six engine designed by Tadek Marek, which produced around 240bhp. This robust output propelled the DB4 to a top speed in excess of 140mph—impressive figures for the period. Driver-focused engineering was complemented by luxurious appointments, ensuring the DB4 delivered both exhilarating performance and refined grand touring comfort.
During its production run, the DB4 evolved through five distinct series—each introducing subtle design refinements and mechanical improvements, such as revised lighting, updated interior details, and upgraded cooling systems. With its timeless styling, advanced engineering, and limited production of just over 1,200 examples, the DB4 remains one of the most coveted Aston Martins. Both a spirited driver’s machine and a purist’s delight, the DB4 laid the groundwork for later icons like the DB4 GT, DB5, and DB6, securing its status as a landmark model in the marque’s storied history.”
